When did you first start training at CrossFit Opelika? October 2013

Favorite WOD:  Anything with squats or lunges.  I have a love/hate relationship with them.

Least Favorite WOD: Anything with Burpees or Wallballs.  Seriously, who came up with these?!

Tell us about your sports and fitness background:

I played softball a couple of years in school and have pretty much tried every workout I could – yoga, personal trainer, running, and Zumba to name a few. I was actually a Zumba instructor for about 3 years.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit?

I had read about Crossfit many times, but it wasn’t until a conversation with a friend of a friend that I decided I should give it a try.

Take us back to your first day of CrossFit…How did you feel?  How do you compare it to workouts today?

I was excited and nervous. I didn’t know anyone, but I quickly realized that it didn’t matter because everyone was so welcoming and encouraging.  The workout was probably one of the most difficult things I had tried to date and I struggled – really struggled – but I left feeling encouraged and excited to come back and try again.

My mindset is much different now during workouts. In the first couple of months, I found myself feeling defeated at times and ready to quit; but the trainers wouldn’t let me. Now when I struggle with something it lights a fire in me to keep practicing. The workouts are still difficult, as they should be, but I am making fewer modifications.  I’ve come so far since that first day.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected?

Physically, I’ve changed in ways I didn’t think were possible. I’ve met my goal on the scale and lost inches in areas I have NEVER been able to lose before. More importantly, I am so much stronger now than I have ever been and I’ve become much less critical of my body (this is a HUGE accomplishment for me).   I find myself much more confident in different areas of my life, personally and professionally.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit Opelika moments:

(1) Finally getting a pull-up and a double-under, yes it may have only been one, but they were firsts in all of my 29 years (fine, 31). (2) Watching someone hit a new PR. It’s exciting and motivating!

Any advice for people just getting started?

Give it time and be patient with yourself.  A little healthy competition is good, but don’t compare yourself to others, we are all at different points in our journey.  Be willing to try something new.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I love obstacle and theme runs; I’ve done the Color Run, Monster Dash, Foam Fest, ROC Race, Graffiti Run, and a few mud runs.  I enjoy reading. I love Pinterst; no I don’t craft, cook, or sew – but if you are looking for any ideas, I probably have a Pin for it.
